Climate activists bring air traffic to a standstill at BER
Climate activists of the “last generation” have invaded the grounds of BER Airport. While some glued themselves, others were out on bicycles. Air traffic at BER was brought to a standstill.
Climate protesters of the “last generation” entered the BER airfield without authorization on Thursday, and air traffic had to be stopped. This was announced by a spokesman for the airport on Thursday of the German Press Agency.
The activists from the group “Last Generation” apparently came to the airport site in two places, both on the north and on the south side. Therefore, both slopes are now closed.
As on the website “FlightRadar24” could be seen, some planes heading towards Berlin changed their course: several machines turned and circled over the airport.
Flights to Leipzig/Halle and Dresden diverted
As a spokesman for Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG confirmed to rbb, 13 flights had already been diverted to Saxony by 6 p.m.: five machines landed at Leipzig/Halle Airport, eight in Dresden.
A spokeswoman for the federal police told rbb how many people are on the site without authorization. She confirmed that a person with a bicycle was on the premises without authorization to make film recordings. Other people would have stuck themselves on the two runways of the airport.
How long the mission will last and when air traffic can be resumed is currently not foreseeable. “We have to take into account that if there are no longer any unauthorized persons on the airfield, further security measures must be taken before air traffic can start again,” said the spokeswoman for the federal police.
Cut through airport fence
The activists streamed the action live on Twitter. There you could see how they snapped through a fence shortly after 4 p.m. and entered the airport area. They then held banners up to the camera and explained their motives. Activists were also seen gluing themselves to the ground. About ten minutes after the start of the action, blue lights could be seen in the live stream, and a little later police officers could also be heard.
The “Last Generation” initially informed about the protest in a press release in the afternoon. Accordingly, some activists stuck to the asphalt, “others ride bicycles over the shunting area and thus bring air traffic to a standstill,” says the statement.
According to the activists, the police were informed about the project by an emergency call immediately before the start of the protest. This information could not be confirmed at first.
