Illegal weapons of war, ammunition, components of a tornado – investigators dug up a whole arsenal on a farm in the Schleswig-Flensburg district last Thursday. The Flensburg police now announced this.

In the yard of a 58-year-old, the officials found a large number of archaeological finds, such as coins from Roman times, anti-aircraft and artillery ammunition, components of an anti-aircraft gun, a tornado and torpedoes as well as other weapons and parts of war weapons. Forces from the State Criminal Police Office, the explosive ordnance clearance service and the riot police were on duty – two archaeologists also took part in the search. The man was initially investigated because of the initial suspicion of criminal offenses under the Schleswig-Holstein Monument Protection Act.

Weapons and coins illegally collected with metal probe?

Further investigations also revealed that he was probably a collector who, among other things, illegally obtained not only archaeological finds but also weapons and ammunition by searching with metal probes. He is said to have offered these for sale in relevant internet auction houses. Now a procedure is being initiated against the man, among other things, for violating the War Weapons Control Act and the Weapons Act. According to the police, there are currently no indications that there was an immediate danger to the civilian population.

As the police pointed out, the illegal possession of both archaeological and ordnance is a criminal offence. And if you search an area with a metal probe, you need a permit from the Archaeological State Office – otherwise you are committing a criminal offense under the Monument Protection Act.
