Five for Munich: Self-Help, Bar Gabányi, Sex Shop Collective – Munich

For many people, it is the point of contact in the city where they can connect for the first time with people who feel a similar need to themselves. Regardless of whether it is psychological problems or whether their relatives were the first to die from Corona and you can connect with other mourners here. For more than 30 years, the Self-Help Center (SHZ) Munich, based in Westend, has been the central point for self-help and self-organization in Munich and the surrounding area. Here individuals are supported to organize themselves as a group. The SHZ is supported by, among others, the state capital and the statutory health insurance associations in Bavaria.

for 15 years Klaus Grothe-Bortlik managed the business effectively here and took stock with satisfaction at the farewell: “Self-help has long since arrived in our city, has become steadily more established and is universally recognized as a matter of course.” His successor Kristina Jacob, 38, has been in the company for 15 years as the head of the advisory and group support department and has now taken over the management at Westendstrasse 68. The social worker Jakob sees a continued high need for support in Munich today: “In a time of many social challenges and currently ever-increasing tendencies towards division, it is a personal concern of mine to believe in people with their potential and ideas, to give them the space and the framework to be effective for oneself and for others in a community, to participate, to have a say and thus to take responsibility.”

Being a stewardess was once more than handing out water and chocolate bars. Because flying itself was even more exciting and exclusive in the last century. Born in Munich Edeltraud Lioba Miller worked as a flight attendant for the American airline Pan Am in the 1960s and 70s and can tell a lot about that time – for example about the strict regulations for the crew and passengers. In “Mythos Flies” (BoD), Miller wrote down her memories of celebrities, good and difficult moments. She will soon be presenting her book at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

When she once did “Maria Stuart,” Schiller “just waved from behind.” Nina Rausch even joked at the time. The founder and director of the “Statt.Oper” and its little sister “Pasinger Fabrikspatzen”, who have been making the finest theater with children and young people for children and young people (but also for adults) for many years, likes to give her young troupe a lot of freedom in text, acting, direction, stage design and music. The Munich native and mother of four children, who studied theater studies, German studies and folklore, worked as an assistant director, dramaturge, script writer and film editor, but also travels a lot to schools. With class 3g of the elementary school at Winthirplatz, she is now bringing “The Little Witch” based on the children’s book classic by Otfried Preußler to the stage of the Pasinger Fabrik at August-Exter-Straße 1, to be seen on Sunday, October 22nd, at 4 p.m on Monday, October 23rd, 9 and 10:30 a.m.; The performance is suitable for children aged four and over.

Sexuality shouldn’t actually be a taboo topic. The feminist sex shop collective “Consent Calling” is committed to this, and has already presented its concept in the Habibi kiosk at the Kammerspiele. The collective now has its own address in Munich’s Werksviertel. The store does not see itself as a conventional erotic shop, but rather as a place for sex positivity and education. “In order to take away people’s shame, I try to approach them as individually as possible when giving advice, without assuming or expecting anything,” says Johanna von Winning (right in the picture), who calls herself Jojo in the collective context. The 26-year-old is responsible for sales at “Consent Calling”. She joined shortly after the collective was founded in 2021. At that time, the team was planning a crowdfunding campaign for their own retail space – not an easy undertaking. Even when landlords got in touch, there was usually no response to the application. The news about a free room in the Container Collective came in handy for the group. Anyone who visits “Consent Calling” will be presented with a selection of sex toys and accessories. Disco balls hang from the ceiling, and there is a shelf with feminist literature on the purple walls. “The topic of consensus is particularly important to us,” says Jojo. At parties and with friends she repeatedly talked about consensual sex, but there was no fixed space for information about it in Munich. The members of “Consent Calling” have previously provided information online and at events. Now they can talk to people in the shop: the new store is open Thursday to Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Bar Gabányi around Stefan Gabanyi has received an award from the trade magazine Mixology. The bar at Beethovenplatz was voted “Institution of the Year”. Now you can ask yourself what an institution is supposed to be in the bar world, “I don’t really know,” says Gabányi herself. For regular guests, their regular bar is always an institution. On the other hand, Schumann’s is already an institution that can be defined as: stands out, stands on its own. It’s the same with Gabanyi’s, it has the highest level of expertise when it comes to live music and whiskey and the right mix, which is what is important in good bars.
