Fiscal policy – Lindner against special tax – economy

The introduction of a special tax on high additional profits from energy companies could do more harm than good, according to Finance Minister Christian Lindner. Companies in Germany are already paying very high taxes, the FDP politician wrote on Twitter. To demand even more from an individual industry “seems arbitrary to me and ruins confidence in our tax system”. An excess profit tax could damage Germany as a location for innovation. “Because high profits are often made by pioneers who have previously invested at high risk for years,” says Lindner. “It would be a shame if they decided against Germany in the future for fear of being punished for their own performance.”
