A nine-year-old from Ukraine is believed to have died in a fire in a larger communal accommodation for refugees in Apolda in Thuringia. According to a police spokesman, the boy is missing, but firefighters found a body after the extinguishing work was completed in the living area of ​​the converted former school. The cause of the fire was initially unclear.




According to the police spokesman, the fire was reported around 5 a.m. on Sunday morning and triggered a large-scale deployment of rescue workers. According to this, around 250 people were brought to safety from the building complex, and ten of those affected were then taken to hospitals for medical care. A forensic examination must finally confirm whether the body found is the missing boy.

Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier confirmed a dead child on Sunday and expressed his condolences to his parents and family. According to the SPD politician, there were also eight injured. “The cause of the fire must now be clarified quickly. The criminal police are investigating with high pressure,” said the minister in Erfurt. He also thanked all rescue workers.

According to the police spokesman, the missing boy’s family is from Ukraine. The fire therefore occurred in the living area of ​​​​the accommodation, the cause was still unclear. After approval by the fire brigade, fire investigators have meanwhile started their work and are looking for the source of the fire, which will provide information about the cause. It is determined “in all directions”.

Accordingly, the affected facility is permanent accommodation for longer stays, not an initial reception facility. The former school was fundamentally remodeled and prepared for this purpose in 2003.
