Because television and film projects in the USA are at a standstill due to the strike, employees in Babelsberg are to go on short-time work – the studio has belonged to the German subsidiary of a US company since the spring.

In the world-famous film studio Babelsberg in Potsdam, there is a poor order situation Short-time work planned. From September 1st there should be short-time work for some of the employees, said a spokeswoman for the German Press Agency on Thursday – the RBB had previously reported on it. The works council spoke in the report of about 40 out of 100 employees who were affected – the spokeswoman confirmed the representation. Studio Babelsberg is considered the cradle of German film. In the spring, the management went to a company that belongs to a US real estate investor.

“We are taking these actions to protect jobs in light of the current shutdown in streaming, television and film projects worldwide as a result of the ongoing US Writers’ and Actors’ Union strikes,” said Co-CEO Andy Weltman. The commitment to the employees, the company and its future as one of the leading locations for the production of content will be maintained. “We are confident that the duration of short-time work can be reduced once production activities resume.”
