According to industry associations, the cinema year 2023 is moving towards good results before the pandemic. However, the market share of German films shrank slightly compared to 2022.

According to industry associations, cinemas in Germany are still on the road to recovery – also thanks to films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”. “Many cinemas have already been able to modernize their buildings and thus welcome more guests. Now it is important to consolidate this trend,” said Christine Berg, CEO of the Main Association of German Film Theaters (HDF Kino), based in Berlin. “Cinema must assert itself as the ‘top of mind’ in people’s leisure activities.” For this to happen, film theaters would have to be enabled to invest.

According to preliminary figures, 87.2 million tickets were sold in 2023, reported HDF Kino and the Allscreens association, citing an industry analysis service. This means there was an increase in visitors of 18.5 percent compared to 2022. The past Cinema year is moving towards the results of good pre-pandemic years. In 2023, Corona restrictions no longer applied in cinemas.

According to the information, sales were 859 million euros (+ 23.7 percent compared to the previous year). On the last cinema weekend of 2023, another good result was achieved with 1.6 million tickets sold.

The five most popular films of last year included the blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” which were released on the same day in the summer. But “The Super Mario Bros. Film”, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” and the Pixar film “Elemental” also posted good numbers. According to tickets sold, the market share of German films was 19.1 percent, 4.6 percentage points below 2022, it said.
