Fifteen Japanese dogs “in a catastrophic state” removed from an association

Some still have to perk up to be put up for adoption, and have the hope of finding a new home. At the Carquefou SPA, near Nantes, about fifteen dogs are gradually recovering from the ordeal they have endured. Last February and April, these akitas and shibas were removed from a shelter in Loire-Atlantique, which has specialized for nearly 15 years in the rescue and adoption of these Japanese dogs, which have been very fashionable lately. “Many people trusted this association, they fell from several floors, laments Ghislaine, the president of the independent refuge of Carquefou. Rescues from individuals are unfortunately quite frequent for us, but this one, which concerns an association, is quite exceptional. »

The Carquefou SPA says it intervened in February with the departmental directorate for the protection of populations (DDPP) after receiving a report from another animal protection association. “On the spot, it was horror, the dogs were in a really catastrophic state”, describes the president. Sick, hungry, injured animals, living in cramped boxes and covered in excrement… Nine of them, “the worst off”, were removed by volunteers. Another passage, a few weeks ago, will bring five more. Some have wounds and can no longer walk.

Shelter activity has ended

The association has since deactivated its website and social networks. “Following the deterioration of the situation in terms of animal protection, the holder agreed to give up her dogs to the SPA (…) and to put an end to her shelter activity”, confirms to 20 minutes the departmental directorate for the protection of populations in Loire-Atlantique.

The Carquefou SPA reports having filed a complaint and hopes that this testimony will “open our eyes” to “animal misery”. She also appealed for donations to cover the heavy medical costs needed to treat the rescued animals. “Our veterinarian follows them, some have already gained 10 or 15 kg but they are still quite fearful, adds Ghislaine. One was able to leave on Saturday, we were all very happy for him. »

Currently, nearly 200 dogs and a hundred cats are waiting to be adopted at the Carquefou SPA.
