Female masturbation, still taboo?

In this new episode of “ Everything is explained », The podcast that questions sexuality and society, we discuss female masturbation with Lucile Bellan, journalist specializing in intimacy topics, podcaster, and author, with illustrator Petite Bohème, from Masturbation to the
Leduc editions (17.90 euros). This illustrated book on “female and feminist masturbation” offers 40 suggestions for masturbation, alone or in pairs, to better understand your body and experience your sexuality with respect, pleasure, curiosity and complicity.

Women always keep quiet masturbating

While working on this episode, I asked myself this question: is female masturbation still taboo? Many studies have been published on this subject. Among them, one Ifop survey of 2017 on female pleasure. It reveals that 75% of women and 95% of men surveyed confided to having masturbated at least once in their life. This practice tends, moreover, to become commonplace for about thirty years.

If women masturbate almost as much as men, why are they more silent about these intimate gestures? Still according to the Ifop study, nearly one in two women (45%) of women in a relationship has never mentioned it to her or her partner. The 18-25 year olds seem to have freer speech, because they are the ones who talk about it the most within the couple. Why this silence ? What are the social and cultural reasons that prevent women from exchanging?

“A book on masturbation today [n’est pas tabou], while we see the feminist movement appropriating all questions of sexuality, intimacy. This was not the case ten years ago, or much less the case. (…) On the other hand, that people talk about their masturbation and ask themselves questions about their own practice, we are not yet fully there. That is to say that on the theory, we have more and more content. But when it gets closer to you, in fact, it’s much less obvious, ”notes the author in this episode.
