Felix Magath’s greatest success as a club footballer: winning the European Cup with HSV in 1983. He scored the 1-0 winner in the game against Juventus Turin. Magath remained loyal to HSV from 1976 to 1986, and he also won the German championship three times and the European Cup Winners’ Cup once with the club.

The “old lady” is in crisis – and possibly before relegation to the second Bundesliga. Felix Magath should now take the helm at Hertha BSC. He has been tried and tested in crises and is sometimes feared by players.
Only 23 points, second to last in the table and at the weekend there was a 2-0 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach: Bundesliga club Hertha BSC is in a crisis again. In eight remaining games, the rescue should now come – with a new coach. Felix Magath should protect Hertha from relegation to the second division.

The successor to the sacked Tayfun Korkut at the Berliners is a surprising personality. Magath had his last engagement in the Oberhaus in 2011 at VfL Wolfsburg. Since then, his name has repeatedly been circling through the press whenever the hut was on fire somewhere, alone: the now 68-year-old was not committed. Instead, Magath was temporarily hired as a team manager at FC Fulham in England, trained in China and worked as a consultant for Würzburger Kickers and GC Admira Wacker Mödling in Austria.
The Bundesliga players should not have bothered Magath’s long absence from the coaching bench. The former HSV midfielder is feared as a “grinder” because of his tough training methods. Over the years, they earned him the nickname “Quälix”, the medicine ball is one of the most important training utensils.
But maybe something like mild old age will set in with him, too. The Monday off was not canceled for the Hertha pros for the time being – unusual for Magath. Only on Tuesday does the preparation for the debut on Saturday against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim begin on the pitch (3.30 p.m., including in the star-Live ticker).
