The former integration minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Joachim Stamp (FDP), will become the federal government’s new special representative for migration. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) told “Welt am Sonntag” that he should “conclude further migration agreements” and accelerate the repatriation of rejected asylum seekers. “He will take office in early 2023.”
On behalf of the federal government, Stamp should put pressure on “countries of origin that are unwilling to cooperate with repatriations,” said SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Wiese of the “Bild” newspaper. In addition, he is to negotiate new “practicable and partnership-based agreements” with important countries of origin. This could include economic cooperation, qualification measures for the German labor market, but also cooperation in the event of expulsions from Germany. This was defined by the traffic light parties in the coalition agreement as an issue in refugee policy.
Stamp has experience with migration policy
Stamp was integration minister and deputy prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. After the FDP’s defeat in the state elections in May 2022, he had to resign. Now, according to Faeser, he should help ensure that there is a “general switch” in migration policy. “With procedures in which entry requirements are checked in advance and people come to us according to clear criteria.”
These measures are intended to reduce the number of 71,000 people who are considered to have entered Germany illegally in 2021. The aim is to prevent illegal migration in people’s home countries.
