Lawns, shrubs, flowers, trees – the Federal Chancellery in Berlin is looking for a new nursery to care for its green spaces. Accurate, reliable and calm work is a must.

The Federal Chancellery is looking for Information from the “Bild” newspaper after a gardening business for the 32,000 square meter representative green area at the seat of the head of government. According to the job application, anyone who wants to have the order for garden maintenance from 2024 must meet “particularly high performance requirements” and satisfy demands that “far exceed the usual level”, the newspaper reported in its Monday edition.

Gardeners have to trim the lawn at the Federal Chancellery

According to this, the future chancellor gardeners must ensure, among other things, that the “ornamental and utility lawn” in front of the building in Berlin’s government district is “mandatory” to a maximum height of five centimeters. Weekly trimming of the green areas is also mandatory in spring and summer.

According to the tender quoted by “Bild”, the “strict geometric form” must be observed when trimming the hedge, whereby in order to achieve an “accurate form” the “use of a direction finder line” is obligatory. After all, the open spaces of the Chancellery are used “for high-ranking events”, including around 60 state visits per year, which is why a “clean and well-kept condition” must be restored.

“Make as little noise as possible”

In their work, the future gardeners must take into account the ability of the Federal Chancellor, his employees and guests to concentrate: Lawnmowers or hedge trimmers must “make as little noise as possible” and must not exceed a “sound power level” of 98 decibels.

All workers employed in the Chancellor’s Garden must therefore also undergo a strict security check. According to “Bild”, it is not known how expensive it is to maintain the Chancellor’s gardens. For the entire “maintenance of the property and structural facilities” of the Chancellery, 5.7 million euros are planned in the federal budget for 2023.
