Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann can hardly wait. FDP leader Christian Lindner had just proposed her as the top candidate for the European elections to the party conference in Berlin on Sunday, and she was already standing at the lectern in the hall of the former post station. “Dear friends,” she begins when the daily committee interrupts her. The formalities must be complied with and the applicant must declare that they want to take part. “Yes, I’m ready,” says Strack-Zimmermann. That alone is enough to make the delegates cheer. It’s not even the speech of the designated top candidate that awaits them, but only the introduction of the applicant – as if that were still necessary.
