Father of baby found dead indicted for “murder”

The father of the infant found dead in an apartment in Caen was indicted for “murder of a fifteen-year-old minor”, and the mother for “concealment of a corpse”, the Caen prosecutor’s office announced this Saturday.

The baby, aged four and a half months, was discovered on Thursday “in a state of advanced decomposition”, the Caen public prosecutor, Joël Garrigue, said on Friday.

The parents of the infant had indicated that “the child died following blows from his father, aged 25, on March 15, 2024”, that is to say almost three weeks ago, according to the same source.

The parents of the infant placed in detention

The man was indicted for “murder of a minor aged fifteen” but also for “habitual violence against minors aged fifteen” and other charges, Joël Garrigue said in a press release on Saturday. “These acts are punishable by life imprisonment,” he said.

The mother of the infant, aged 21, was indicted for “concealment of a corpse and failure to assist a fifteen-year-old child in danger”, among other charges, the magistrate said. Facts “punishable by a maximum sentence of seven years of imprisonment”, he said.

A judicial investigation was opened and the parents of the infant were placed in pre-trial detention by decision of the judge of liberty, said the prosecutor.

Acts of violence

When he died, the baby had been “covered with several layers of textiles and objects intended to prevent the spread of decomposition odors,” Joël Garrigue indicated in his press release on Friday.

The child’s mother said she “could no longer stand this situation” and finally called on her family and the police, according to the same source.

She had also declared having suffered violence from her partner, the prosecutor said.
