Fatal drive in the Ikea parking lot: Five years in prison for speeders – Bavaria

After the death of a 21-year-old in a furniture store parking lot near Augsburg due to a car frenzy, the driver of the car was sentenced to five years in prison. The Augsburg regional court convicted the 55-year-old on Thursday, among other things, of a prohibited motor vehicle race that resulted in death.

In August 2022, the defendant accelerated an SUV with almost 560 horsepower and weighing more than two and a half tons to well over 100 kilometers per hour in the city and then lost control of the car in a curve. The car literally flew across the adjacent parking lot and then crashed into a shopping cart frame.

Two customers of the furniture store had to run away from the vehicle. The passenger in the driver’s car died and the two passengers in the back seat were injured.

The defendant made a confession during the trial. The presiding judge Michael Schneider spoke of a senseless and completely incomprehensible frenzy. It was a disastrous journey in a vehicle that was “completely overloaded” in terms of horsepower and weight.

The public prosecutor had demanded five years and nine months in prison, the defense attorney had demanded three years and ten months in prison. The lawyers for the victims and survivors had spoken out in favor of a significantly longer prison sentence (ref. 1KLs 600 Js 128210/22).
