A driver comes off the road and hits a group of schoolchildren. A girl dies. How could this happen?
One day after a schoolgirl was hit by a car and fatally injured in front of a daycare center in Hessen, the cause of the accident is still unclear.
It is still being determined, said a spokesman for the police headquarters in North Hesse. According to previous knowledge, a 30-year-old driver came off the road on Friday morning and spotted a group of schoolchildren on a sidewalk in front of a daycare center. The man also suffered serious injuries.
An eight-year-old girl died of serious injuries in the hospital a few hours after the accident in Witzenhausen (Werra-Meißner district). Two girls, aged seven and eight, were seriously injured, the police spokesman said. They are still under medical care, but are not injured in a life-threatening manner.
The police assume an accident. There are no indications of intent, the spokesman said on Saturday. A blood sample was taken from the 30-year-old to see if he had been drinking alcohol. The results are still being awaited. However, the man did not give the impression that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
