Family barometer: mothers continue to do more care work – politics

Children, household, earning money: Many mothers think that men and women should be treated equally. But the family barometer shows that only a few couples can do this.

Mothers do more care work than fathers, even if they wished otherwise. This is a central finding of the current family barometer. The report published by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs shows that there are still problems in many German families when it comes to reconciliation: Although almost half of the parents would like childcare, household and work to be shared equally as partners, only a considerably smaller proportion can actually implement this. “We want to use the family barometer to measure the pressure in families,” said Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) on Monday when the report was presented in Berlin. This pressure is obviously high – not least due to the sharp increase in inflation during the course of the pandemic and the Ukraine war.
