Faced with the Covid-19 tsunami, the Paris police headquarters takes action for New Year’s Eve

The Covid-19 continues to sweep over Île-de-France. With an incidence rate exceeding 2,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Paris and 1,294 in the rest of the region, the situation seems to have gotten out of hand.

This is even more true in young people with an incidence rate of over 2,700 in 20-29 year olds. It even exceeds 4,200 in Paris for this same age category and 3,131 cases for 30-39 year olds. The positivity rate is now at 10.1%, which means that one in 10 people tested is positive.

Impressive figures despite the holidays

The progression of the virus, and in particular of its variant Omicron, has consequences on hospital pressure. Thus, 3,771 people were hospitalized in the region because of the Covid-19. Worse, the number of people admitted to critical care is increasing, 721 against 618 the previous week.

At the ARS, contacted by 20 minutes, we are worried about these strong figures for a holiday period: “Even if it is a holiday where we meet, there is no school and many fewer people at work and in transport. Yet the virus continues to progress impressively. “To the point that the AP-HP has already called for non-emergency care to be deprogrammed.

Drinking places closed at 2 a.m. for New Year’s Eve

To limit the impact of the end of year celebrations, many measures have already been taken. In addition to the national measures announced by Jean Castex on Monday, others specific to the region appeared in a press release from the Paris Police Prefecture. Thus, wearing a mask is once again compulsory for anyone over the age of 11 in the capital as in Hauts-de-Seine, Yvelines, Val-de-Marne and in the towns of Essonne.

The press release from the prefecture also specifies that the drinking establishments will have to close their doors from 2 a.m. for New Year’s Eve, this Saturday, and also at 2 a.m. this Sunday. Dance activities will also be banned, in keeping with the ban on drinking while standing in establishments open to the public.

Gatherings and alcohol consumption prohibited in public spaces

For those who thought to catch up outside, it is also missed since the gatherings of people giving rise to the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the public highway are also prohibited, to avoid regroupings. Those who do not respect this ban could be fined 135 euros.

Better yet, to prevent these gatherings, the police headquarters announced that in certain areas “traditionally very busy during the New Year”, the consumption of alcohol in public spaces and take-out will be prohibited from 6 p.m. this Friday, until 6 p.m. on Saturday January 1st.

To enforce these rules, in addition to preventing the usual risks of overflow of a New Year’s Eve, the police headquarters indicates that it has mobilized nearly 9,000 police and soldiers in the capital.
