Explosions at two airfields – three dead

There have been explosions at two airfields in Russia. Russia blames Ukrainian drones.

After two explosions at Russian military airports, the Ministry of Defense has blamed Ukraine. “On the morning of December 5, the Kiev regime tried to use Soviet-made reactive drones to attack the Diagilyevo military airfields in the Ryazan region and Engels in the Saratov region in order to disable long-haul Russian aircraft,” the ministry said via Telegram with. Previously, Kyiv had already indicated participation.

The Russian military confirmed that three soldiers were killed and four others hospitalized with injuries. However, the long-range bombers were only slightly damaged, also thanks to the use of anti-aircraft defenses.

An explosion occurred at the Dyagilevo airfield near the city of Ryazan. As the Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported, a tanker exploded, which then caught fire. An airplane is also said to have been damaged. According to reports from the Russian media, Tu-95 strategic land-range bombers are stationed there.

A second detonation occurred at the Engels-2 military airport near the city of Saratov. “An unidentified drone attacked an airfield in the Saratov region,” Baza said. Strategic bombers are also stationed there. The damage is said to have been caused by wreckage of the drones that were allegedly intercepted beforehand.

There was initially no reaction from the official Ukrainian side. Advisor to the Ukrainian President Mykhailo Podolyak cryptically tweeted: “If something is launched into the airspace of other countries, sooner or later unidentified flying objects will return to the starting point.”
