The new episodes aren’t even here yet, but the creator of “The Crown” is already defending himself against critical voices. It’s all about King Charles and Princess Diana.

Stars behind and in front of the camera of ‘The Crown’ have denied criticism that the Netflix series smear the British royal family after the death of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022). The fifth season has not yet been released, the new episodes are scheduled to appear on November 9th. It is about the 1990s with many crises in the royal family. Among other things, the broken marriage between the current king, Charles III. (73), and his first wife, Princess Diana (1961-1997).

TheTelegraph” reported that the palace was concerned about this. An anonymous source said to be close to the king described the Netflix series as “exploitative”. Even former Prime Minister John Major (79), who starred in the series by Jonny Lee Miller ( 49) has criticized the allegedly negative portrayal of Charles in season 5. Concerns have been expressed about “The Crown” that the reputation of the royal family will be damaged because many people do not distinguish between the fictional series and reality.

“The Crown” makers on filming Diana’s death: “Heavy responsibility”

In conversation with the US industry portal “Variety‘The Crown’ creator Peter Morgan, 59, and actors Elizabeth Debicki, 32, and Dominic West, 53, who play Diana and Charles, have denied claims that the series is ‘unkind’ to the royals. “I think we all have to accept that the 1990s were a difficult time for the royal family and King Charles will almost certainly have some painful memories from that time,” Morgan said.

“But that doesn’t mean the story will be unkind to him or the monarchy in hindsight. The series certainly isn’t.” He has “tremendous sympathy for a man in his position” and for this family, Morgan said. “People are more understanding and compassionate than we sometimes expect.”

“Peter and the entire crew are doing their best to really handle everything with such delicacy, truth and complexity, just like the actors,” Debicki told Variety of filming Diana’s death. West stated depicting Diana’s death carries “a heavy, heavy responsibility to get it right and something I think we all take pretty seriously”.
