Peter Gorschlüter, director of the Folkwang Museum in Essen, stands at the entrance to a largely empty rotunda, in the middle of which is a table with books and exhibition catalogs, and tries to explain this emptiness. The plan was to present the “Afrofuturism” section of the new Folkwang autumn exhibition “We is the Future” here. The fact that instead only reading material on the topic and detailed wall inscriptions can be seen has nothing to do with the content of the planned exhibits, but everything to do with the political world situation and the anti-Semitism debate that is currently omnipresent in the cultural sector.
