At the same time, the 40-year-old Olympic champion and three-time world champion announced in his video shot in the hospital room that he wanted to end his extraordinary career at the end of the coming year.
After a fall a few weeks ago and a subsequent infection in his hip, he had to have up to five more surgeries. He had his first operation on Thursday. “This is the end of my Kona dreams for 2022,” said Frodeno. He is still full of passion and still burns for the sport. “I still love him too much,” he said. “I’m the next old boy who can’t find the jump.”
Frodeno, who won the World Cup in Hawaii in 2015, 2016 and 2019, had to miss the 2021 World Cup, which was postponed to the beginning of May and moved to St. George in the US state of Utah. At that time, a partial tear in the Achilles tendon stopped him. When he made his comeback at Challenge Roth in early July, he had to give up at the beginning of the course.
