Excavation in Egypt: archaeologists discover 2000-year-old tunnel

During an excavation in western Alexandria, researchers have discovered an underground passage. The Egyptian-Dominican archaeologists discover the 1305 meter long tunnel under the temple of the ancient city of Taposiris Magna. The tunnel was at a depth of about 20 meters. The team led by archaeologist Kathleen Martinez also found these two alabaster heads in it. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, the water supply tunnel was used by thousands of people. It dates from the Ptolemaic period (204 BC to 30 AD) and is estimated to be 2000 years old. In the past, researchers have also been able to make other impressive discoveries in the temple complexes of Taposiris Magna. In 2021, a 2,000-year-old mummy with a golden tongue was discovered here. Archaeologists also found this marble mask here at the time. The tunnel was under a temple dedicated to Osiris, the Egyptian god of the underworld.
