It’s official: technical inspections for two-wheelers will be compulsory from April 15. Motorized three-wheelers and quadricycles are also affected by this new regulation. However, not everyone is called to immediately go to a control center because the implementation will be gradual, specifies Capital.

A different date depending on age

Two-wheelers whose date of first entry into circulation is before April 15, 2017 will be the first to be affected. Their owners will have to undergo technical inspection before August 14, 2024. Vehicles put into circulation after April 15, 2017 will have until December 31, 2024.

If the two-wheeler was registered between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019, its first inspection must be carried out in 2025. If it was registered between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, it will be for 2026. Finally, for two-wheelers registered after January 1, 2022, the technical inspection must take place “within 4 and a half to 5 years following its entry into circulation” specifies Public service.

A check valid for three years

Motorcycles are not the only ones affected. The technical inspection also applies to motorized two-wheelers of 50 cm³ and more, three-wheelers with a power greater than 15 kW, cars without a license, scooters and quads, i.e. all category L vehicles. (L1e, L2e, L5e, L6e and L7e). The validity period of the technical inspection will be three years.

In the event of a sale, a technical inspection must be carried out six months before the transaction. Owners of competition motorcycles (enduro and trial) who are licensed with a sports federation are exempt. Motorcycles put into circulation before 1960 also escape control. Those put into circulation between 1960 and 2017 must pass it every five years.

Two types of unfavorable reviews

The technical inspection of two-wheelers has fewer points than for cars, even if this number is likely to increase over time. Initially, control will be mainly oriented towards security. The steering bodies, lighting and tires and suspensions will be examined, specifies Capital.

Three types of notification are awarded. If no major and critical failure is noted, the control is favorable. With at least one major failure, the opinion is unfavorable and requires a second inspection within two months. If a critical fault is detected, then the vehicle gets an unfavorable rating. “In this case, the vehicle is no longer authorized to circulate from midnight on the day of the inspection,” specifies Service-public. Immediate repairs and a second inspection two months later are then imposed.
