In the middle of the autumn holidays in many northern German states, the pilots of the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings stop working. Hamburg in particular will be affected by the three-day strike, where more than half of the Eurowings flights are canceled again.

Eurowings pilots continued their three-day strike today – with many failures at Hamburg Airport as well. As on Monday, 29 of 47 planned departures were cancelled. Just as many arrivals had to be cancelled. According to a Eurowings spokesman, all customers were informed about the failures the day before.

Even more flight cancellations on Wednesday

And it is already becoming apparent that on Wednesday – the third and final day of the strike – even more flights will be cancelled. As can be seen from the online flight overview of the fifth largest German airport, 36 of the 44 planned Eurowings departures will then be cancelled. Roughly the same number of arrivals will be affected.

There is a three-day strike

Many Eurowings pilots laid down their work for a total of three days after the Cockpit Association called for a strike. Eurowings then changed the flight schedule across Germany so that more than half of the passengers can reach their planned destinations despite the strike. At the start of the week alone, 240 of 488 planned Eurowings flights were canceled. At the start of the strike, no Eurowings connections were canceled at the airports in Hanover and Bremen.

Passengers should inform themselves in good time

In Hanover the three planned departures and arrivals have not yet been cancelled, the same applies to one planned departure and one landing in Bremen. However, all passengers are asked to find out about the status of their flight in advance on the Eurowings homepage, the app or at your airport. The pilots’ strike should end in the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

Eurowings: Pushing the limits of what is economically feasible

In the labor dispute, the fronts remain hardened even before the second and third day of the strike. The airline’s chief financial officer, Kai Duve, emphasized on Monday that his company had reached the limits of what was economically feasible with the latest offer. On this basis, the Vereinigung Cockpit pilots’ union must return to the negotiating table. The strike costs the company tens of millions of euros every day. That jeopardizes jobs. The dispute is about, among other things, 14 additional days off, which Cockpit demands. Eurowings is ready for ten additional days.

Flights operated by Eurowings Germany are affected

The Lufthansa subsidiary had announced that it would keep the effects of the strike as low as possible. For example, flights to partner airlines would be rebooked, it said. According to Eurowings, only flights from Eurowings Germany are affected by the strike by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, not those from the Austrian subsidiary Eurowings Europe or from Eurowings Discover, which operates from Frankfurt and Munich.

One-day strike in early October with consequences

On October 6th were already due to the one-day strike action around half of 500 planned flights canceled – including to and from Hamburg and Hanover. Up to 30,000 passengers across Germany were affected by the strike.

At the beginning of September, a pilots’ strike at the parent company almost completely paralyzed Lufthansa’s flight operations. It was about salary demands of the VC, which are currently not the subject of the negotiations. Eurowings flights were not affected at the time.
