EU Labor and Social Commissioner Nicolas Schmit wants to replace Ursula von der Leyen at the head of the European Commission. He is the only candidate as the Social Democrats’ top European candidate for the 2024 European elections star met the Luxembourger.
The European Social Democrats (PES) were able to submit their application for the transnational top candidate by Wednesday. The only candidate for the presidency of the European Commission is the Luxembourger Nicolas Schmit, 70, currently Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. Spain’s Socialists and the German SPD have already pledged their support. The SPE wants to take a final vote on personnel at the beginning of March.
Mr. Schmit, you want to run for the Social Democrats as the leading European candidate. Today it seems EU more divided than ever. The 27 member states do not even agree on the issue of aid to Ukraine or the Gaza war. What do you want to do to ensure that Brussels is taken seriously again?
