The SC Freibug meets the Italian record champions Juventus Turin in the round of 16 of the Europa League, the surprise team from Union Berlin meets Union Saint-Gilloise from Belgium. The lot is not that attractive for Bayer Leverkusen: The Werkself initially welcome Hungarian representatives Ferencváros Budapest at their own stadium.
The Irons had already played against Saint-Gilloise in the group phase. At home you lost 0:1. The 1-0 win in the second leg secured advancement to the knockout stages.
Freiburg will initially play away from home, Union and Bayer have home advantage in the first leg. Leverkusen and Berlin prevailed in the intermediate round, Freiburg qualified directly for the round of 16 as group winners.

“Juventus Turin is an amazing team, they have an incredible history, a lot of great players and a cool stadium – you always dream of playing against such teams,” said Freiburg’s Italian international Vincenzo Grifo.
The round of 16 first leg will be played on March 9th, with the second leg taking place a week later (March 16th).

Duels between teams from one country possible from the quarter-finals
Duels politically excluded by UEFA are not possible, which is probably why there was only one restriction: teams from the same association are not allowed to meet in the round of 16. That is only possible from the next round, the quarter-finals.
The winner of the tournament will receive a starting right in the group stage of the Champions League of the 2023/24 season.

Europa Conference League also drawn
The round of 16 was also drawn for the Europa Conference League on Friday (1 p.m.). After the departure of 1. FC Köln, there are no longer any teams from the Bundesliga.
