Eurogroup – Donohoe to remain President – Economy

Ireland’s Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is running for a second term as President of the Eurogroup, the body of finance ministers from the 19 euro countries. The election is scheduled to take place in December, according to the ministers’ meeting in Brussels on Monday. The Christian Democrat Donohoe has headed the body as President since the summer of 2020, and a term of office lasts two and a half years. However, there is a complication: the Irish government’s coalition agreement stipulates that the 48-year-old Donohoe will step down as finance minister in the coming weeks and take up a different portfolio. Ireland’s government will soon be represented by another finance minister in the euro group. Donohoe could still serve as president, as the independent 20th politician on the panel. This would be unusual, but it has happened before: Jean-Claude Juncker led the Eurogroup from 2009 to early 2013, although the Luxembourger had previously resigned from the post of finance minister. Juncker later became Commission President.
