EU Parliament – dispute over artificial intelligence – economy

Artificial intelligence is a future technology that arouses many hopes – and fear of abuse. In April the EU Commission presented a draft law to regulate the use of the technology. This regulation must now be dealt with by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers as a body of the member states. An important preliminary decision is to be made in parliament this Thursday: The group chairmen want to agree on which committee will be in charge. This in turn depends on which MEP will be responsible for the legal act, as the so-called rapporteur. Specialist politicians from the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag recently asked in a letter that the Christian Democrats in the EU Parliament should absolutely ensure that the legal committee is determined. Because then the CDU MEP Axel Voss would be rapporteur. If another committee were in charge, however, Social Democrats would be rapporteurs – and they would try to tighten the draft law, warn the members of the Bundestag. That must “be prevented in any case,” it says in the letter, which of the SZ is present. In the EU Parliament, it is likely that in the end two committees will share the lead: Justice and the internal market. The rapporteurs would then be the Italian social democrat Brando Benifei in addition to the CDU man Voss.
