More than 150,000 Ukrainian students in Germany

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, schools in Germany have taken in 150,071 refugee children and young people from Ukraine. The number is expected to increase further in the new school year.
The number of schoolchildren from Ukraine admitted to Germany exceeded the 150,000 mark a good five months after the start of the Russian war of aggression. As the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) announced on Tuesday, 150,071 refugee children and young people were registered at schools in Germany last week. So far, most have found accommodation in Bavaria (27,523), North Rhine-Westphalia (24,662) and Baden-Württemberg (21,392). The numbers have risen steadily since the attack on Ukraine at the end of February.
Summer holidays are now in all federal states. Federal Minister of Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger expects that the number of Ukrainian schoolchildren will continue to rise in the new school year because compulsory schooling has not yet been enforced so strictly and children continue to receive lessons from Ukraine via digital channels. After the summer holidays, compulsory schooling will certainly apply everywhere and that’s why there will be more Ukrainian schoolchildren, the FDP politician said in June. There are a total of around eleven million schoolchildren in Germany.
