Ersan Mondtag directs Thomas Jonigk’s “Phaedra” – Kultur at the Schauspiel Köln

Playmobil! life size! Ersan Mondtag’s hearts fly right from the start for this toy-colored stage at the Schauspiel Köln. Three cute houses shine yellow, purple and blue, with which giant children could playfully learn to lead the most boring life in the world: that in American suburbs of the 1950s. Sounds perfect for telling a horror story about a woman named Phaedra, played here by Belgian stage all-star Benny Claessens: imprisoned in this mendacious idyll, she is waiting for her husband Theseus, who murdered and raped during the war, to return home. Unfortunately, the stage design remains the smartest idea in the production by director and stage designer Mondtag.
