The authorship of this sentence is usually attributed to Gerhard Schröder: “First comes the country, then comes the party.” But he was influenced by one of his predecessors at the top of the SPD and in the Chancellery: Willy Brandt warned in one Mirror-Interview in 1992to place the fate of the republic above that of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
