Enigma: Largest black diamond offered at auction

A gem that breaks records. This black diamond is called “The Enigma”, which translates to: The Enigma, and weighs 555.55 carats. That puts him in the Guinness Book of Records. The name is program. Not much else is known about the stone. Neither where it was found nor who the current owner is. What is known is that it is a carbonado. The expert Aaron Celestian said on Wednesday in Los Angeles, where the stone was exhibited. He is a minerals specialist at the Natural History Museum of LA: “First of all, carbonado diamonds are very rare. Their origin and formation are shrouded in mystery. Because there aren’t many of them. And this is a particularly great example of this type of diamond.” Experts suspect that the black diamond is between 2.6 and 3.8 billion years old and could have been formed by a meteorite impact. Sotheby’s auction house expects the stone to fetch around $5 million. The auction will only take place online. The auction ends on February 9th.
