It stood here for hundreds of years, in a hollow in the Northumberland National Park in northern England. But since September 28th, the mighty sycamore maple has been lying on the ground, apparently felled for reasons that are still unknown. The Sycamore Gap Tree was famous far beyond the borders of England. In 2016 it was voted England’s Tree of the Year. In 1991, he appeared in the film “Robin Hood: King of Thieves” with Kevin Costner in the title role. The management of the national park assumes that the tree was felled intentionally. The authorities are investigating. Most recently, a 16-year-old was arrested.
