Energy transition – Sluggish grid expansion burdens electricity customers – Economy

The Agora Energiewende think tank criticizes the timetable for the expansion of the power grids. “The sluggish grid expansion is delaying the conversion to a climate-neutral electricity system and burdening electricity customers with higher grid fees,” said Germany Director Simon Müller. According to the Federal Network Agency, costs of 1.4 billion euros were incurred in 2020 alone due to the shutdown of renewable energies in the event of grid bottlenecks and the use of expensive power plants to compensate. “In order to achieve the goal of 80 percent renewable electricity by 2030, the federal and state governments must drastically accelerate the expansion of the grid,” said Müller. A system development plan is needed that aligns the electricity, hydrogen and heating networks with climate neutrality. The expansion of the power grid plays a central role in the energy transition. In northern Germany, for example, electricity generated in a climate-neutral manner should be able to reach the south more easily via new lines.
