The FDP wants to stop the dismantling of nuclear power plants. Environment Minister Steffi Lemke takes a critical view of this. It doesn’t just take a change in the law to put the power plants back on the grid.
Environment Minister Steffi Lemke has a push from the FDP parliamentary group, the Stop dismantling the nuclear power plants, criticized. “It is the FDP’s own responsibility and decision whether they want to submit such a backward-looking motion to the German Bundestag,” said the Green politician on the sidelines of a summer trip lasting several days.
The chairman of the FDP parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Christian Dürr, had previously questioned the nuclear phase-out. He told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” that the parliamentary group would discuss at its closed meeting in Dresden that “the dismantling of the nuclear power plants that are still functioning should be stopped”. With the shutdown of the last three nuclear power plants Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland, Germany will forego the production of 30 terawatt hours of electricity per year. This is noticeable in the power grid. He would have wished that “the nuclear power plants could remain connected to the grid in this tense situation,” said Dürr.
The Ministry of the Environment emphasized that approval and a change in the law in the Bundestag are needed to put the nuclear power plants back on the grid. In addition, the plants would run out of fuel.
