Emergency call terminals soon in front of high schools

At the start of 2024, around fifteen sites in the Paca region will be equipped with emergency call terminals directly connected to law enforcement supervision centers, announces the president of the regional council Renaud Muselier (Renaissance), who reaffirms “ its desire to “innovate” and “go further” in terms of security.

Installed near high schools and train stations identified as presenting security issues, most of the terminals will be equipped with cameras. In a second phase of the experiment, municipalities will also be able to acquire these emergency call terminals with co-financing from the region.

Facial recognition

After the assassination of Dominique Bernard in Arras, Renaud Muselier also puts facial recognition back on the agenda in high schools. A new authorization file must be submitted before the end of the year to the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties (CNIL). The latter had refused such an experiment in 2019, estimating that “this system concerning students, most of them minors, with the sole aim of streamlining and securing access appears neither necessary nor proportionate to achieve these purposes”.

The CNIL then considered alternative means such as badge control sufficient to control access to a high school. With the current context, the Paca region hopes for an evolution of the doctrine.
