Earthquake shakes flooded southeast Iran

Heavy rain had already severely affected the people in southeastern Iran – now the earth has also shaken. The consequences are not yet clear.

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake has hit the southeast, which has been plagued by flooding Iran shaken. According to the US Earthquake Observatory USGS, the quake occurred in the province of Sistan and Balochistan at a depth of 35 kilometers. Initially there were no reports of casualties or damage.

Unusually heavy rain in recent days has led to major flooding in the economically weakened province. According to the state news agency Irna, the storm caused electricity and water supplies to collapse in dozens of cities. Thousands of people are affected.

The neighboring country of Pakistan, which borders the province, also recently experienced storms with devastating floods. Thousands of residents of the economically important Pakistani port city of Gwadar were brought to safety last week. Dozens of people across the country lost their lives in the extreme weather events.

There are repeated severe tremors in the region where the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian plates meet. According to the United Nations, more than 1,500 people died in a devastating series of earthquakes in neighboring Afghanistan in autumn 2023.
