While the presidential camp and the Republicans seek an agreement on the immigration bill, within the framework of a joint committee (CMP), Monday December 18, Elisabeth Borne makes a promise to an LR figure. The Prime Minister undertakes to present a reform of state medical aid (AME) in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, consulted by the political service of France Télévisions.
The head of government writes that she asked “to the ministers concerned” to prepare a reform “at the beginning of 2024”. The joint committee begins its work. The body which must decide the fate of the immigration bill meets from 5 p.m. Its work was suspended shortly after. After the surprise adoption of a rejection motion on December 11, the government decided to entrust this body, bringing together deputies and senators, with the task of trying to reach a text which would satisfy both LR and the majority.
Negotiations continue. For its part, the executive is confident: “We are closer to an agreement than to a disagreement”assured Monday the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, nevertheless recognizing that“There are still many details to be resolved“. “Commitments have been made by the government. Now, we are awaiting the final drafting of the text”explained the LR deputy, Annie Genevard, who will sit on the CMP and for whom avenues of agreement “requires to be brought to fruition”.
“There is a desire for agreement,” according to Yaël Braun-Pivet. TThroughout Sunday, the majority’s leaders took to the media to express their desire to reach a compromise. “There is a desire for agreement (…) on the part of the government, on the part of the presidential majority and on the part of part of our opposition”, assured the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet. She stated that she was “supporter of a compromise”even if “compromise costs”.
A possible agreement could be put to the vote as early as Tuesday. If the joint committee reaches a compromise, this new version should be submitted to the National Assembly and the Senate for a vote on Tuesday. Eric Ciotti listed a certain number of requests to find an agreement, saying he expected from the government a firm commitment to legislate on state medical aid at the beginning of 2024, and a “new editorial” of the article on the regularization of certain undocumented workers in professions in shortage.
