The American writer Philip Roth called his French colleague Louis-Ferdinand Céline a “disgusting figure” because of his blatant anti-Semitism. Nevertheless, Céline is a “really great writer” – Roth rated him even higher than Marcel Proust. But: “In order to read it, I have to switch off my Jewish consciousness.” Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel, who translated Céline’s novels into German, puts it this way: “An author with whom you cannot make peace.”
