Eleven new doctoral centers in Bavaria – Bavaria

In Bavaria, young researchers can now also acquire a doctorate at universities of applied sciences and technical universities. The universities have established themselves as outstanding research institutions, Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU) announced on Wednesday in Munich. “It is a logical consequence that they now also receive the right to award doctorates.”

As a first step, eleven doctoral centers are now being set up in the Free State. There, young scientists can do their doctorates on artificial intelligence and sustainability as well as in the health sector; Until now, this was only possible at or in cooperation with universities. The long road to an independent right to award doctorates has now been successfully completed, commented the Bavarian University Association.

On the basis of the new Bavarian University Innovation Act, universities had been able to apply for the subject-specific right to award doctorates for particularly research-intensive areas since February. After a selection by an independent commission, 13 universities – some in association – have now been granted the right to award doctorates for an initial period of seven years. This means they can now independently train young scientists and increase their competitiveness. There will be a second round of applications in October.
