Firecrackers ignited, spectators injured

The incident after almost an hour of play pushed the game into the background. Referee Felix Brych interrupted the game (57th) after a loud bang and smoke in the away fans’ block. There were turbulent scenes, security forces and an alleged firecracker-thrower engaged in a kind of chase.

Then the stadium announcement: A spectator had been injured by a firecracker and had to be treated. The game continued anyway and referee Brych blew the whistle again (63′).

Two suspects taken into custody

As the police announced in the evening, at least eleven people were injured in the firecracker explosion. The police spoke of blast trauma.

The police were able to identify two suspects during the game. They were arrested and are in police custody. Spectators who were also injured but have not yet reported the incident are asked to contact the Augsburg police (Tel. 0821/323-3810).

Hoffenheim fan already questioned by police

After the incident, Augsburg’s managing director Michael Ströll spoke of an “unpleasant situation”, Hoffenheim’s manager Alexander Rosen called it “merciless madness that cannot be put into words. A very big apology from us.”
