The conservative Spanish election winner Feijóo is making a second and probably last attempt to be elected head of government in parliament. But someone else probably has better chances.

Spain’s conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo faces what is considered a hopeless second Parliament’s vote on his candidacy as the new head of government sharply attacked acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The 62-year-old leader of the People’s Party (PP) said in the lower house in Madrid that he accused him of striving for a “government of lies and deception” if he responded to Catalan separatists’ demands for an amnesty and a new independence referendum.

At the same time, he admitted his failure before the vote. “I don’t want to be head of government at the expense of the dignity of my country,” he said, referring to Sánchez. Feijóo lost the first vote on Wednesday. 172 MPs voted for the politician from Galicia and 178 against him. This result was also expected in a roll-call vote in the afternoon. If there is no majority in parliament for a new government by November 27th, a new election will be necessary, which would be held on January 14th.
