Former Transport Minister Scheuer: Withdrawal from federal politics

There were already skeptical voices about Andreas Scheuer running again. Now it is clear: the next federal election will take place without him.
The former Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer no longer wants to run in the next federal election. The CSU politician announced this at his party’s New Year’s reception in Passau. The “Passauer Neue Presse” first reported on it. Scheuer himself was initially unavailable since his announcement.
The CSU said that the 49-year-old had not taken the step lightly. According to information from the German Press Agency, in the past few weeks and months there have been repeated skeptical voices in the Lower Bavaria CSU district association regarding Scheuer’s candidacy again.
Scheuer looks positively into the future
“I have served for over 20 years and look back on this time with great gratitude. I met a lot of exciting people and did a lot of exciting tasks. That fills me with joy and pride,” the newspaper quoted Scheuer’s statement.
He looks to the future “with incredible joy”: “It’s not only beautiful when new life arises, but also when new opportunities arise,” says Scheuer, who had a baby with his wife Julia in November. According to the information, Scheuer did not want to comment on his future plans.
Scheuer’s career
Scheuer has been a member of the Bundestag since 2002, where he represents the Passau constituency. From 2009 to 2013 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, and from December 2013 to 2018 he took over the position of CSU General Secretary alongside the then party leader Horst Seehofer. After the 2018 federal election, he became Federal Transport Minister in Angela Merkel’s (CDU) fourth cabinet.
As a minister, Scheuer came under massive criticism because of the failed car toll – even within the CSU, he was subsequently seen as a burden by many. In 2023, Scheuer handed over the influential post of CSU district chairman in Lower Bavaria to the former district administrator and incumbent Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter.
