Election campaign in Bavaria: of cult figures and legends – Bavaria

Anyone who writes: “The older ones among us will still remember” admits that he is no longer the freshest. But today there is no other way, because we remember the Munich local election campaign in 1978, when the then CSU candidate was almost omnipresent on posters and in real life. This soon led to the satirical verse: “Where I go and babble, Erich Kiesl stands.”

These days, however, you can no longer go to a district brewery opening or a discounter car park flea market without Markus Söder bugging himself and saying a few humorous words of welcome. Election campaign, and presumably only to be able to skip many plenary sessions in the Bavarian state parliament for another five years. But well, Söder says to himself: “People should get to know me.” It can backfire, but it worked for Kiesl at first. It was only later that the people of Munich realized that he might have been better suited to be the mayor of Hinterpfuideifi.

Meanwhile, Söder’s Vice Hubert Aiwanger covers the flank a little further to the right with his mission “Make Bavaria bläd again”. Recently he is even said to have been dubbed a “cult figure” in Fischbachau. From then on, it’s not far to the “legend”. The disadvantage of this is that no one really knows what legends used to be and what was invention. In this respect, one is taken aback when the Bavarian SPD plans events with “SPD legends” in Munich and Nuremberg during the election campaign, and involuntarily thinks of the Viennese songwriter Voodoo Jürgens, whose biggest hit is the song “Heite gross ma Tote aus!” is. Fortunately, however, it is the case that the Socialists think of so-called living legends. Otherwise one would almost have had to think about the death drive in politics.

But one should be happy that there is still life in Bavaria at all. At the moment, everyone is saying that you can’t have any time for children with less than 300,000 euros a year if the state doesn’t lend a helping hand. Yes, the desire to have children and parental love are ultimately a luxury and a question of finances. The older ones among us will still remember that there was once no parental allowance and that many people were still so stupid as to have children. On top of that with low salaries or even as a single parent! It’s hard to believe what was done back then.
