Wikileaks founder Assange has been revoked by a court of Ecuadorian citizenship. Assange is currently in custody in the UK. In 2012 he fled to the Ecuadorian embassy.
Ecuador has revoked his Ecuadorian citizenship from Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The decision was made without a fair trial, Assange’s lawyer, Carlos Poveda, told the AP news agency. Assange was not allowed to appear in court.
“On the date (Assange) was summoned, he was deprived of his liberty and in a health crisis in the liberty deprivation center where he was being held,” Poveda said. He will file appeals to clarify the decision.
Ecuadorian citizenship since 2018
Assange is located in the maximum security Belmarsh Prison in the UK. He was arrested in 2019 for violating bail bonds. In 2012 he fled to the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he stayed for seven years. He wanted to avoid being extradited to Sweden on charges of rape and sexual assault.
Assange received Ecuadorian citizenship in January 2018. Ecuador wanted Assange to be diplomatic so that he could leave the embassy in London. A court revoked Assange’s citizenship on Monday. The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry told the AP that the court had “acted independently”.
The Justice Department informed Assange in response to a complaint from the State Department that his citizenship was invalid. The authorities are charged with the fact that the naturalization letter for Assange contained inconsistencies.
