Economic situation: The old measured values are no longer suitable – opinion

Employment good, everything good? It is not that easy. Anyone who wants to find out something about the state of the German economy should no longer look at the unemployment rate – nor should they listen to Christian Lindner.

Imagine it’s an economic crisis and no one notices. That is roughly the state Germany is in right now. It feels like every second German citizen feels they have to complain loudly about something, such as inflation, the Greens or gender-appropriate language. From a purely economic point of view, most people are doing well: they go on vacation, they shop, and – this is the most important thing – a lot of people have a job. This can be seen in the unemployment rate, which at six percent, despite a slight increase since mid-2022, remains at a level rarely seen in the past 40 years.
