Ebay, Airbnb & Co.: The tax office now wants to earn money – business

Now it’s getting serious: Anyone who regularly does business on Ebay, Amazon or Etsy or rents out via Airbnb & Co. and earns a lot from it may find themselves having to deal with the tax authorities for the first time this year. The platforms have until January 31st to report private individuals who traded briskly in 2023 and made good profits – and thereby possibly evaded taxes. This is ensured by the new Platform Tax Transparency Act (PStTG), which now gives tax offices a concrete insight into who sells or rents often and a lot. “Small sellers have nothing to fear, not even those who sell antiques or jewelry from their estate,” says Florian Köbler, head of the German Tax Union in Berlin. The new regulation is intended to put a stop to bootleggers who “operate illegally on platforms” and cause the state to lose billions in taxes.
