“The Lions’ Den”
“Eat Wurscht”: This is what the quick currywurst snack tastes like in a glass

The idea of ”Eat Wurscht”, a currywurst in a glass, is not entirely new. But founder Marco Peters wants to convince in the “Den of the Lions” with refined variations of the popular snack. Does he succeed?

With french fries or bread rolls: a currywurst always works. Even if there is no snack bar nearby. “Eat Wurscht” comes from the pot and is in the glass. Can that go well? Of the star tried the DHDL product.

For many years she has been at the forefront of the most popular dishes in company canteens. In Cologne’s “Tatort” it was an institution until 2020 and for Commissioners Schenk and Ballauf the culinary nightcap after a case was solved. In short: a life without currywurst is conceivable, but pointless. Marco Peters sees it that way too. For ten years, the 49-year-old from Duisburg sizzled classic curry sausages in his food truck. So good that its original was named the best currywurst in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019. When Corona threatened to destroy his business a short time later, Peters thought: “I don’t care”. With his currywurst snack in a glass, he now wants to conquer the “lions’ den” and tickle the taste buds of investors. Does one of the lions bite? We have already fed each other through. And that’s our judgment.

The first impression

Marco Peters wants to convince all currywurst fans of his not entirely new idea with a culinary five-a-side chain. And “all” also means vegetarians who cannot and do not want to keep their hands off the Germans’ favorite snack. The original, a (European) hot variant, the fruit creations strawberry and pumpkin-mango as well as the vegetarian curry snack with sauce are filled in standard 250-gram jars. So far so unspectacular. Commendable: According to the imprint, the products are gluten and lactose-free and do not contain any flavor enhancers or preservatives. A look at the list of ingredients also reveals that you can find around 115 grams of chopped grilled sausage in the jar for your money. So sauce lovers can look forward to: 56 percent and thus the main component of “Don’t care” is the currywurst sauce. Depending on the flavor, there are also various spices, herbs, onions, pumpkin, strawberries and mango. The last entry leaves me a little at a loss: “Edible casing made from beef collagen”. But more on that later.

A matter of taste: "Don't care" as an original and a hot version

The test

The quick currywurst snack can be prepared in the microwave or in a small saucepan. In the absence of a microwave, we opted for the second option in the test. And as is customary with fast food, you can’t go much wrong. Open the glass, put the contents in the saucepan, place the hotplate on medium heat. Important: All five snacks should be stirred regularly when heated. Otherwise the sauces will burn easily on the bottom of the pot. If you don’t feel like doing extensive cleaning, you should avoid that. The warm up only takes a few minutes. my star-Colleague and I start the test meal with the vegetarian curry snack. The first thing you notice here is the unusually thick consistency of the sauce, which otherwise comes across as spicy and tasty. Which one cannot say about the chopped up currywurst substitute. Since we both prefer the classic currywurst, it would be unfair to judge the taste at this point.

It goes on with that original, which, like all other varieties, is served with a freshly sliced baguette. Can taste confirm what our noses sniff out? Yes and no. The curry tomato sauce can easily compete with most currywurst stalls. Just the thing for CW fans who don’t care about Scoville and fire in the throat. On the other hand, we are rather disappointed with the sausage itself. Because it is missing, this may be due to its processing for the glass, simply the bite. The sausage meat, which according to Marco Peters is supplied by a regional butcher, is soft and the mouthfeel is somehow tepid. As a native of Thuringia, I also miss the crispness of the sausage skin. All in all, the chopped grilled sausage in the glass doesn’t have much in common with the one on the charcoal grill. As expected, the sausage meat is not convincing with the other types either. In contrast to the sauces. Because they are extremely tasty. All who like it a little more fiery, be that sharp variant recommended by “Eat Wurscht”. It unfolds its fine sharpness a little late, but with a surprising amount of thump. The spicy curry tomato sauce may not be a Scoville monster, but it is definitely a challenge for sensitive tongues and stomachs.

The lion's den: Currywurst snack "I don't care" with baguette in a bowl

The classic from the snack bar is now also available by the glass. How does the currywurst snack “I don’t care” taste? We tried the DHDL product.

We were also positively surprised by the fruity sauce experiments away from the original. The pumpkin and mango mix is particularly well seasoned. The rather unusual strawberry curry sauce also convinced us. The fact that tastes are different should be mentioned at this point for the sake of completeness.

The conclusion (in a nutshell)

Sauces: hui! Currywurst: well.

In order to make his currywurst snack known throughout Germany, Marco Peters will venture into “Die Höhle der Löwen” on Monday from 8:15 pm (Vox). Does it meet the taste of Judith Williams, Ralf Dümmel and Co.? For a rather small investment of 49,000 euros, the 49-year-old from Duisburg offers a whopping 49 percent of “Eat Wurscht”. Does one of the lions bite?
