Nighttime aftershocks in New York, this time with a magnitude of 4.0
The New York metropolitan area was hit by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake on Friday. Its center was near Lebanon in the US state of New Jersey. The streets in Manhattan briefly shook. There were aftershocks during the night.
EEarthquakes have shaken the densely populated New York metropolitan region. Residents in the northeast of the metropolis reported that they felt the earthquake. The US earthquake monitoring station USGS initially reported the magnitude of the quake on Friday morning (local time) as 4.8. The center of the quake was near Lebanon, New Jersey – or about 70 kilometers west of New York and 80 kilometers north of Philadelphia. The New York Fire Department said it had not yet received any reports of damage.
There were aftershocks during the night. Shocks of magnitude 4.0 were measured, this time the center was Gladstone, New Jersey. This time too there were videos of shaking houses.
“I’m fine,” said the Empire State Building’s online profile in the short message service X. A meeting on the situation in the Gaza Strip in the UN Security Council was briefly interrupted.
“Is this an earthquake?” asked Janti Soeripto from the organization Save the Children, who was giving a speech at the time. Shortly afterwards, emergency warnings confirming the earthquake rang on many diplomats’ mobile phones.
A store owner near the New Jersey earthquake center reported waking up from the quake. “The whole house shook,” she said. In the Brooklyn district, closet doors and lamps rattled, an AFP journalist reported.
US President Joe Biden is informed and is in contact with the authorities concerned, said his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. Earthquakes on the US East Coast are rare, but not unusual, said the responsible US authority.

New York Mayor Eric Adams was also informed about the quake, said his spokesman Fabien Levy. The consequences are still being assessed, although there have been no reports of major impacts so far.
In downtown Manhattan, drivers honked as the streets briefly shook. Residents in Brooklyn heard a booming noise and building shaking. In an apartment building in Manhattan’s East Village, an earthquake-experienced resident from California calmed nervous neighbors. People in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut and other places on the East Coast also reported feeling the quake.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the quake was felt across the state. “My team is assessing the impacts and any damage, and we will keep the public updated throughout the day,” Hochul said.
